Draw Me After You...

by Char Scott

Last week we began a study of the Song of Songs in order to allow the language of this book to become a part of our own understanding and our own prayers. The Song of Songs is an expression of the heart of Jesus, our Bridegroom King, and His burning desire for us, His bride. As we study this love song, written for us, our hearts will respond in greater love for the Lord. The purpose of the Song of Songs is to increase our passion for Jesus as we see and comprehend more fully His love for us.

We learned that this Song is the greatest song, above all others--the highest expression of the ravished heart of the Lord for His people, His Bride. In this Song, the Holy Spirit reveals a divine pattern of growing into spiritual maturity and holy passion. We can see ourselves over and over in this book, and the understanding of these principles will help us understand our own spiritual journey. We are changed at the deepest levels when we turn the language of this book into a prayerful conversation with the Lord, when we turn the scripture into our own heartfelt prayer, and spend time meditating on the truth that is being revealed to our hearts. A devotional reading of this book will enlarge our hearts in love for God. We will be transformed when we discover how God thinks and feels about us, especially in our weakness.

Tonight we are going to look at chapter one, verses two through four. “May He kiss me with the kisses of His mouth! For Your love is better than wine. Because of the fragrance of your good ointments, Your name is ointment poured forth; therefore, the maidens love You. Draw me after You and let us run together! The King has brought me into His chambers. We will rejoice in You and be glad; we will extol Your love more than wine. Rightly do they love You.”

Remember that the divine kiss is a metaphor of intimacy with Jesus. “The kisses of His mouth” could also be called the kisses of His word. His words proceed out of His mouth, producing life and love in our hearts. Each time the Lord kisses us through His Word, greater spiritual life is produced in us. The kiss is like God putting His hand on our hearts with fire, expanding our capacity to receive His love and to give Him our love in return.

This divine kiss, or fire of love, manifests itself by tenderizing our hearts so we feel some of what He feels for us. Our hearts are by nature hard, dull, and insensitive to the things God feels. There is nothing more precious and pleasant to us than to be empowered to feel some of the things God feels. According to Romans 5:5, the love of God is poured into the heart of man by the Holy Spirit. The kisses of His Word inspire divine romance. The divine kiss is the central theme of the Song, in the context of the beauty of the Bridegroom and the Bride.

Jesus’ inheritance is a Bride who longs for His affection and His kisses. He receives the Bride as a gift from the Father and as the reward of His suffering. To Jesus, the greatest prize of all the ages is a Bride who longs for the deeper things of His heart. When we realize we can be part of that reward, our hearts are filled with awe, gratitude, and passion for the Lord.

The Song begins with the maiden longing for a kiss. She has a spiritual hunger for these deeper things of God. She has awakened to new holy desires. She cries out for His kiss because she is no longer satisfied with the initial experience of salvation. She wants more. This dissatisfaction and desire is a gift from the Holy Spirit.

Why does the maiden long for His kisses? Because “Your love is better than wine.” Wine is the drink of celebration. It exhilarates the heart. His love is better than the inferior wine of the world’s pleasures. The pleasures of loving and knowing God far surpass anything the world has to offer. God wants to free us from the inferior pleasures of sin by revealing the superior pleasures of the Gospel. As we experience the romance of the Gospel, the power of sin will be minimized in our lives, and we will be enabled to overcome temptation. Sin loses its attraction in the light of His beauty and love for us. Obedience then flows out of love, not just fear or duty. People who are truly lovesick for Jesus will do anything for Him. Lovers give far more than all others.

His love is even better than the blessings of God in our natural circumstances. The Lord blesses us with favor in many ways, in relationships, good health, financial increase, and greater spiritual authority, but the experience of God’s love is the best of His blessings. These other blessings do not necessarily connect us with His heart. Many people never go beyond asking for temporal blessings, but God’s love is even more delightful than these blessings. We must continually seek this experience of love and not exchange it for any other blessings, even the good things God would give us. This was the “one thing” David said he would seek after, to experience the love and beauty of God revealed to his spirit.

Verse three tells of “the fragrance of the good ointments, or perfumes.” This is the fragrance of His beauty, especially of His tender affections. Perfume is not an activity or visible substance. It is something we sense or feel. It expresses the essence of the thing. This verse speaks of something God is, of His affection and lovely personality. It speaks of His emotional beauty, His internal beauty, passion and pleasure. His fragrance stirs our hearts in a powerful way.

God literally has fragrance. Heaven is filled with the fragrance that is a reflection of God’s heart, His splendor, and His beauty. It is both a literal and a metaphorical fragrance. The fragrance of God is evident on the earth in such things as a glorious sunset, a beautiful rose, or the tender love of a mother for her child. His desire is that His fragrance become our fragrance. Let’s read in II Cor.2:14 & 15, “But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place, for we are a fragrance of Christ to God .“ In the Song, the maiden’s experience progressively produces His fragrance in her. The most vivid expression of His fragrance is His tender mercies, His compassion, and His affection for us.

“Your name is ointment poured forth.” The attributes of Jesus are openly revealed. When Jesus left His place in heaven, became a man, lived a life of love fully revealing the nature of the Father, and willingly laid down His life for us, His true character was revealed to all. There could be no greater gift or sacrifice, and it was all done out of love for us. This is a God we can trust, in our own lives and in His dealings in history. His oils are truly fragrant; how wise and loving are all His ways. The maiden loves Him because of the sweet perfume of who He is and the fragrance of His name poured forth in redemption, in our lives, and in history.

“Therefore, the maidens love You.” As we see God’s love revealed in His actions and in His nature, it produces love and worship in our hearts, as with the daughters of Jerusalem.

The maiden expresses her desires in a two-fold prayer, “Draw me after You, and let us run together.” The Song expresses the secret to fulfilling both of the two Great Commandments and the Great Commission. “Draw me after You” is her heart cry for deep intimacy with God, to become an extravagant worshipper of God. It is the cry to love the Lord with all her heart. “Let us run together” is the desire to partner in ministry, to love your neighbor as yourself and to make disciples of all nations. A complete life vision contains both aspects. There is a constant tension in our lives between these two visions. The order is also important--we must always come and be filled ourselves before we pour out to others. First, we receive God’s love, and then we give it away.

“The King has brought me into His chambers.” The chamber is the place where God carries us into special experiences in His grace. It is that private place where the maiden’s personal testimony with God was developed through various experiences such as personal revelations, encounters, and impartations in the Spirit. God gives these as a gift to strengthen our faith. In difficult times, we look back and remember God’s goodness and His faithfulness. Each of us must develop our own personal history with the Lord. No one else can do it for us.

“We will rejoice in You and be glad.” This is a prophetic encouragement to the daughters by the maiden. They will rejoice as they experience and remember His love.

“We will remember your love more than wine.” His love is our main source of strength and cleansing. The confession of God’s love is a powerful act of spiritual warfare during difficult times.

“Rightly do they love You.” It is wise to love God. His love satisfies and captures our heart as nothing else can.

These first few verses of the Song contain several of the key phrases we can pray and contemplate. “Let Him kiss me. Touch my heart with the fire of Your Word.” “Show me how your love is better than any wine. “Reveal your fragrance in my life--reveal your tender affection for me.” “Draw me after You”, “Let us run together--open opportunities to share your love with others.”, and “Bring me into your chambers--give me those special times only for me where your heart is revealed.” As we pray these desires, He will answer and take us deeper into intimacy with Him.

Let’s pray. Father, we want to be wise. We long for Your kisses to ignite our hearts on fire for You. We long to know Your fragrance and to make it our own. Bring us into Your chambers tonight and reveal Your love for us. Draw us after You, and let us run together. Thank you that we will rejoice in You and be glad .

Your love is better to us than wine! Amen.
