Why Study the Song of Songs?by Char Scott Why is it so important to take time to prayerfully study this book, the Song of Songs? One reason is simply because the lover of our soul, the Lord Jesus, wrote it for us, His Beloved. If someone we love poured out his heart in a love song for us, we would surely take time to listen and to enjoy it! We would play it over and over again in our hearts. We would savor the moment repeatedly in our minds. As we receive the message of love the song brings us, our love would be increased for the one who loved us enough to write it for us. The same is true for this love Song. As we listen to and receive the truth of God’s love for us in the Song, our hearts will respond in greater passion and love for Him. The purpose of the Song is to increase our love for Jesus as we see and understand more fully His love for us. This Song contains the clearest expression of the Lord’s heart for us in all of scripture. Although the message of God’s love for His people is written from Genesis to Revelations, no other book contains such a complete picture of His heart than this one. Even the poetic language used in the Song is designed to reach and move our hearts on a unique level. As we take the poetic language in this Song and allow images to be produced in our minds, truth is released into our hearts on a deeper level. Another important reason to study this Song is that it contains all the necessary principles of growing in mature love and bridal partnership. We can see ourselves over and over in the various sections of the Song. As the maiden faces her darkness and sin, as she faces her fears, as she makes the decision to obey and leave her place of comfort and security, and as she begins to function in ministry at His side, we see ourselves. The lessons in the Song can encourage us, help us get our bearings during times of struggle, and give us confidence that the Lord truly is with us and working effectively in our lives to establish us in His purposes. We can recognize the various seasons in the life of a believer and are assured that our experience is not unusual or unique. Others have faced the same situations, and the Lord has proven Himself faithful. The Song reveals what we call the bridal paradigm. This paradigm is the perspective that our primary identity is that we are the beautiful and beloved Bride of Jesus. When we understand this paradigm, it allows us to discover truths that were previously hidden to us throughout the Word of God. We begin to see the thread of the bridal paradigm in every book of the Bible. The ravished heart of the Lord for His Bride is the primary motivation in all He has done, is doing, and will do in the future. The Song draws us further into intimacy with the Lord. Each of us must develop our own personal history with the Lord. Our own experiences of His faithfulness, of His encouragement and expressions of love for us personally are what will hold us steady in times of trial and struggle. There are times when no one else’s faith can make the difference in our lives. We must know the Lord is faithful to us, in our time of need. The understanding of God’s beauty and kindness, and of His deep passion and desire for us, will produce profound and lasting repentance in our lives. We are all “dark but lovely” to Him. The truth of our flesh is not the whole truth about us. We are lovers of God that struggle with sin, not sinners who struggle to love God. We destroy strongholds by agreeing with how God thinks and feels about us. The Lord removes darkness in our lives by increasing the light. He enables us to face our fears through a deeper revelation of His love for us. The Lord sees us as we are, yet He also sees us clearly as we will be. He enjoys us at every stage of maturity. He uses endearing language to motivate us. The primary way God uses to change His weak Bride is by nourishing and cherishing her. When God’s powerful love is released in our hearts, it produces a strong desire to obey Him. As we begin to see ourselves more and more as He sees us, we are transformed. As we experience the romance of the gospel, the power of sin will be minimized in our lives, and we will be enabled to overcome temptation. We need to hear over and over how beautiful we are to Him. The banner over our lives is love. His love defines our lives and gives us our identity as His Bride. Everything God does in our lives is out of love for us and will result in us loving Him more. In His love, God seeks to remove anything in our lives that hinders love. He is able to keep our hearts full of love for Him, fascinated and tenderized, empowered to love and enjoy Him. The pleasures of loving God far surpass any other human experience. Enjoying God is essential to consistent spiritual growth. Being able to receive His love and to feel His affection separates us from all the rest of creation. The recognition that we are His greatest desire significantly changes the way we think and feel about ourselves. The Father has promised His Son a Bride with a leaning heart of loyal love that will not stray in either seasons of blessing or seasons of trial and difficulty. When Jesus left His place in heaven, became a man, and died for us, He proved for all time that He has our good in mind. We are carried out of the wilderness on the finished work of the Cross. In the Song, the Lord feeds us with the revelation of all He has done for us in redemption. This is the truest expression of our value to Him. We can live totally safe in His loving care and protection. He has proven His passionate love for us, giving all He has and all He is. Jesus’ victory over this fallen world makes Him a sympathetic high priest who understands our temptations and struggles. The only safe place for us to go is with Jesus in every season of our lives. The Song teaches us that there is nothing more delightful to the Lord than the love that flows from the heart of His Bride. Every glance of our heart toward the Lord touches and moves Him. The crown that Jesus wants more than any other is the crown of the voluntary love of His Bride. We, the Bride, are the inheritance the Father has promised His Son, the only inheritance. The goal of the Bride’s life is not just to feel His love and presence, but also to function as His partner in ministry. At the beginning of the Song, the maiden prayed, “Draw me after You, and let us run together.” A complete life vision contains a desire to fulfill both the first and second great commandments. The more we see God’s heart for us, the more we can see His heart for others. We must fulfill the first commandment, loving Him with our whole heart, before we can fulfill the second and love our neighbor as ourselves. The mature Bride is committed to continued intimacy with Jesus as the source of her security and identity while giving herself in ministry to others as He leads. Each time it is the Lord who initiates any spiritual progress we make. He moves in our hearts and lives, and we simply respond. We always begin with a hunger for more of the Lord. We ask for His kisses, the touch of His Word on our hearts that moves us to love Him more. The Song begins with a divine kiss and ends with the divine seal, a seal of fire put in place by the Holy Spirit. So let us begin tonight by asking Him for more, more of His love revealed to our hearts, another kiss of His Word, and all that we need to come to that place where we receive the seal of the fire of His great love on our hearts.
